The collision occurred in the westbound lanes, blocking all traffic heading toward the Caldecott Tunnel. Emergency teams from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), as well as fire and rescue personnel, immediately responded to the scene. The severity of the crash and the number of vehicles involved made it difficult for first responders to quickly clear the wreckage.

The overturned big rig caused major traffic disruptions, leading authorities to issue a sig-alert, warning drivers of the hazardous conditions and advising them to avoid the area. Traffic was diverted onto alternate routes, including Highway 13, as officials worked to manage the congestion and begin their investigation into the cause of the crash. The scene remained closed for an extended period while emergency crews worked to upright the semi-truck and clear the debris.

At least one individual was transported to a local hospital with injuries sustained in the crash, though authorities have not yet disclosed the severity of the injuries or whether additional occupants required medical attention. Fortunately, it is unclear at this point whether anyone sustained life-threatening injuries, but the collision’s impact on traffic and emergency resources was significant.

The incident forced drivers to endure lengthy delays, and as the investigation and cleanup continued well into the evening, traffic remained heavily impacted in both directions. By late afternoon, authorities were urging drivers to seek alternate routes, including Highway 13, as delays stretched for miles in both directions.

The CHP is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, which remains unclear at this time. It is possible that wet weather conditions, driver error, or mechanical failure may have contributed to the accident, though no official cause has been determined. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward as they continue their investigation.

As of now, Highway 24 westbound remains closed near the Caldecott Tunnel, and travelers are advised to avoid the area for the foreseeable future.
